If you’re starting a professional career as a freelance writer, there are a few things you want to be sure to know in order to gain experience and become more skilled. Here are some of the best tips we’ve found to help you do just those things:
We’ve all heard the famous saying “variety is the spice of life”; well the same can be true about writing projects. Whenever freelancers write on just one type of project – whether it is resumes, essay writing, articles, etc. – they will eventually experience a kind of boredom and may find that their writing begins to suffer. Don’t let this happen. Take on a variety of projects to keep your writing life interesting throughout.
In addition to taking on different types of projects, you should work with several different clients. It’s a good idea to find some long term clients who can continuously provide you with assignments, but keep half of your time reserved to find smaller projects that will open up your portfolio towards a wider audience. Remember that it’s easier to win jobs when you show a long, positive work experience. This is made much easier by working with hundreds of different clients.
The best way to improve your writing is read and practice several writing styles. Some are conversational while others can be business or technical. No matter what you read you should always look towards different forms. Try reading magazines, short blogs, long blogs, profiles and more. The more you take in the greater your experience will be in producing great content.
It’s a good idea to know what others in your field are up to. There is a sense of competition when you apply for a job, and it is in many senses. You are up against about a dozen or so freelancers who want the job as much as you do. You should be aware of how others succeed in winning projects by checking up on their profiles. Reading other freelancers’ works will show what you need to learn to succeed in the field.
If you want to up your game you should learn how to work with others. Large writing projects allow for the opportunity to bring your voice into a group setting. You will get some valuable feedback that will help you center around the skills you need to improve on. You’ll also create a circle of writers you can work with on future projects.
