If you are just starting out as a freelance content writer, then there are certain things that you should know before you get started, in order to maximise your chances of success.
A common complaint from people looking for freelance content work is that there simply aren’t enough well-paid jobs. Whilst it is true that the global nature of freelance writing websites means that there will be writers from poorer countries, all willing to do the work for far less than you may be able to, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t clients are willing to pay good money for high-quality work.
Although some of the rates are far too low to even bother with, sometimes it still makes sense to take on one or two of these low-paid jobs when you’re just starting out. The best way to think of it is that these low-paid jobs act as some sort of short apprenticeship. So, although you may not get paid much to begin with, it will give you experience, as well as helping you to develop a reputation for yourself.
As suggested, it is a good idea to take on just about any work when you first start out, so as to build a reputation. There are many clients available on freelance websites that are willing to take new writers on, but on the condition of low pay. Whilst you don’t want to be writing for these clients forever, they can help you make your first steps into the industry.
Once you have a bit of experience under your belt, it can be a good idea to branch out to try and find private clients of your own. This may mean going directly to magazines, publications, or private companies and sending a proposal relating to any work that you think they might benefit from. Whether you are interested in writing articles, brochures or anything else, try and identify a need that the company might have, and send them a proposal outlining how you can help them.
Finally, is important that you act professionally at all times. This means responding to emails and other forms of communication promptly, as well as doing the work to a high standard, every single time.
