If you would like to become a freelance writer, but you are brand-new to the profession, and have very little experience, then you may be wondering if there are any strategies that you can use in order to improve your chances of finding paid work.
The first thing to be aware of is that, just because you do not have any experience, it doesn’t mean that you will not be out to succeed as a writer. In fact, all writers will have had no experience at some point in their life, and will have had to have develop their skills in order to get where they are.
Although it may seem like you haven’t got any experience, especially if you have not been paid any work that you have done, it may still be that you have more experience than you are aware of. For example, if you studied at university or college then you may have had to write a variety of different essays as part of your education. In fact, whether you went on to higher education or not, you will almost certainly have written some form of academic paper at school.
Ideally, if you can find a copy of this work, and you are satisfied that is of a high enough quality, then you can provide this as a sample when applying for jobs early on in your career. Once you progress, and have completed various jobs, you will then have further samples which you can use in order to build a portfolio.
Another thing to consider is where to find work in the first place. You may wish to look on freelance websites, as they provide easy access to a wide range of clients, and a large number of job opportunities. However, whilst this is a good approach for writers towards the beginning of their career, many writers will often develop their career by looking for opportunities from private clients.
No matter how you choose to find clients, you will almost certainly need to write some form of job proposal. As part of your proposal, it is a good idea to identify what it is that the client requires, before outlining how you will meet these requirements, and ultimately be of benefit to whomever you are working for. In fact, it is a much better approach to address the client’s needs, rather than to simply outline any experience that you have.
