A good source of jobs for freelance writers can be found in a wide range of freelancing websites. Generally, these jobs will listed under a general writing category, with a variety of sub-categories for different types of writing work. Ideally, you will want to find a website that has a grant writing category, as it will make it far easier to find jobs that are posted relating to your field of expertise.
One thing to be aware of when using these sites is that many of the clients that post jobs are looking for writers that are willing to work for as little money as possible. However, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible to find well-paid jobs; it just takes a little bit more patience to find them.
Rather than wasting your time applying to every job that comes along, it is a good idea to research the client beforehand, so as to be aware of whether or not you will be suitable for the job, and whether the pay will be acceptable for you. As a result, it is good idea to be selective with any bids you put in for grant writing jobs, and try and only apply for jobs that you think will be financially worth it.
To help improve your chance of winning jobs, it can be a good idea to have a portfolio developed. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have many writing samples to start with, and even if they are not related to grant writing, as long as you have something to produce should a client ask for some samples of your work, as this will give you a better chance of being awarded the job.
Another good tip is to start a blog or website where you can demonstrate your writing expertise, as well as potentially displaying your portfolio.
Aside from freelance websites, there are other ways in which you can win work. For example, you may wish to contact companies directly in order to try and find private work. Often this approach will be better paid than work that you will find on content mills; however, it generally requires more motivation and dedication to find the work.
